Vendor information: WSIB clearance, insurance and safety training

Commercial Garage Doorman is registered with the WSIB and provides a clearance certificate on request, carries commercial general liability insurance with a certificate of insurance on request, and keeps its technicians current on Ontario Working at Heights training. This page explains what each of those documents does for the company hiring us, with the government source for each, so a vendor set-up or a site induction can be done in one email.

Why ask a contractor for a WSIB clearance certificate?

Because it protects you. The WSIB says a clearance gives principals the assurance that it will not hold them liable for unpaid premiums of the contractor they hire. Clearances are valid for up to 90 days from the date of issue, so a current one is worth asking for at the start of each job or quarter, and on construction work they must be in place before any construction work begins and for the duration of the work. You can also look up a contractor’s clearance yourself through the WSIB’s online services.

What does Working at Heights training mean on an Ontario site?

It is Ontario’s required fall-protection training, set by the Occupational Health and Safety Awareness and Training regulation, O. Reg. 297/13. Under section 7 an employer must ensure that a worker who may use one of the listed methods of fall protection has completed a working at heights program approved by the Chief Prevention Officer, from an approved provider. Under section 8 the training is valid for three years from the date it was successfully completed, and under section 10 the employer keeps a record showing the worker’s name, the approved training provider, the date and the program completed. Overhead door work at the top of an opening, on a lift or a ladder, is exactly the work it is for, which is why we keep it current.

Why is the insurance limit not printed here?

Because the certificate is the document that settles it. A limit printed on a web page is a number with no date, no insurer and no named holder; a certificate of insurance carries all three, and it is what your risk team needs on file anyway. Ask and we send it.
