# Loading Dock Door Guide: Sizing, Duty Cycles & Safety

A dock door is not a garage door that happens to face a truck. It lives four feet above the driveway, it can run an hourly duty cycle around the clock, forklifts pass through it all day, and when it is open with no trailer against it, it is a fall hazard. The industry publishes real guidance for all of that, and most of it is decided before the door is ever ordered.

## How big should a dock door actually be?

Smaller than most people guess. Dock door openings typically run from **8×8 to 10×10 feet**: , and DASMA’s guidance is to size the opening to the largest truck body that will actually use it. Its own example: if the biggest trailer you receive is 8’6" wide by 9’4" tall inside, a 12×12 door is oversized, and every extra foot is warehouse space and conditioned air given away. The dock floor itself typically sits **48 inches above grade**: , which is what lines the building up with a trailer bed.

## Why do dock doors wear out faster than every other door on the site?

Duty cycle. DASMA notes a heavy-use dock door can run an **hourly, round-the-clock open and close cycle**: . Do that arithmetic against a standard commercial spring and you get the answer to why the same dock position keeps failing: the door is simply out-running its counterbalance rating. The same sheet flags the other killer: impact. Forklifts pass through dock openings constantly, so mounting clips, weather seals and jamb brackets should be chosen either for easy replacement or for impact resistance, and knockout or breakaway bottom sections and impact-resistant guides exist for exactly this duty. Counterbalance matters here too: a door that drifts down into the opening is a door parked where the forklift traffic is.

## When is an open dock door a safety problem?

Whenever there is nothing on the other side of it. The dock floor is roughly four feet up, so DASMA’s guidance is that the door **should not be opened unless a transport vehicle is parked at the dock** to fill the opening, or a barrier is present to prevent a fall. Door interlocks and controls tied to the vehicle restraint exist to enforce exactly that, and communication-light systems between dock staff and drivers are covered by the vehicle-restraint standard the sheet draws its definitions from.

## What about heat, drafts and the energy bill?

Two separate problems that get blamed on each other. When the door is closed, thermal performance is the door’s job: panel material and thickness, the door-to-jamb seal, the fit between sections, and the assembly’s U-factor, which is properly determined to ANSI/DASMA 105 or NFRC 100/102, not read off a brochure. When the door is open against a trailer, the seal is the *shelter’s* job: dock seals and shelters close the gap between building and truck so the conditioned air stays inside and the weather stays out. A freezing dock office usually needs the second fix, not a new door.

## Who decides the wind rating?

Not the catalogue. Where a local building code is adopted and enforced, **the local authority having jurisdiction determines the door’s performance requirements**: , and wind-load performance is determined in accordance with ANSI/DASMA 108. On an exposed dock wall along this corridor that is not paperwork trivia: it is the difference between a curtain that holds in a storm and a claim.

## What belongs near the door, and what does not?

Electrical, HVAC, water lines and sprinkler equipment routinely end up in the door’s operating zone during a fit-out, and every one of them either blocks the install or blocks the service visit later. DASMA’s dock sheet points to its ["Red Zone" clearance guidance](https://www.commercialgaragedoorman.ca/guides/rolling-door-red-zone/) for rolling doors, and the principle generalises: know the door’s service area before the other trades fill it. Locating leveller pits, bollards and equipment controls with the door in mind is cheaper on the drawing than it is after the conduit is on the wall.
